How to interact with a child with schizoid character
The schizoid character is afraid of contact, both physical and emotional. So we will see very young children who, when we approach them for a kiss or give them a caress, are annoyed and sometimes repulsive. So we must approach them with caution, not force the contact. We must give them time to get used to it and approach slowly. When they enter the 3/6 age group, we must educate them to have contact with themselves and this can be done by stimulating the child to ask himself instead of us replacing him/her. Let me give you an example: instead of saying put on a sweater because it's cold, we ask the child if he/she feels cold. In this way we stimulate him/her to ask himself/herself and to get in touch with his/her emotions and sensations. This type of relationship is optimal in the relationship with the doctor
How to interact with the child with oral character
The oral character has not been adequately nourished in early childhood, and by nourishment we also mean the affective one. It must be “warmed up”, the child must be approached with affective warmth and “nourished” through attention and presence. This must happen in the first 3 years of life.
Furthermore, the child with an oral character has little awareness of his own needs, so the parent must avoid always deciding for the child what his need is.
An anxious parent who anticipates the choices of the child does not help the oral character to define itself and therefore to assert itself. In this the role of the doctor is fundamental, it is necessary to "educate" the parents not to answer in place of the child, and to let him or her, with their own modalities, to answer. It is a difficult undertaking.
How to interact with a child with a masochistic character
the masochistic character defends itself from any form of invasiveness and closes itself to communication. This character is the consequence of an invasive and, at times, humiliating attitude, implemented by the parent. Therefore in this case the parent must be educated first, who must understand that if he enters the life of the child with a strong leg and without the due delicacy and respect, a masochistic child will be the logical consequence.
There are many ways to be invasive, starting from the first months of weaning, when the baby is fed: you can gently bring the spoon close to the baby's lips, so that he tastes the food delicately and, when he opens his mouth, insert it gently, or you can forcefully insert the spoon directly into the mouth, even if the lips do not open.
The latter is an example of an invasive attitude that can begin very early. In these cases the doctor must have a lot of patience and know how to delicately enter the child's life. Even the visit can contain invasive elements, therefore it is necessary to be delicate and careful.
How to Educate a Child with a Psychopathic Character
Here too, the same applies as for the masochist. This type of character develops as a result of a very controlling and manipulative parent. Therefore, the father or mother must be made aware of their attitude and the consequences on their child. But from experience I know that it is a very difficult case because a controlling and manipulative individual does not accept becoming aware of this.
Therefore, this is, in my opinion, the most difficult case to deal with compared to the previous ones.
We can, however, suggest that parents try to control their child less, to leave him more free to express himself, to assert himself and to be what he is, regardless of what the parent wants him to be, and to push parents to understand that a child is not a property, he is a human being in his own right, with his own personality that does not necessarily have to coincide with the desire or will of the parents.
The doctor of a child with a psychopathic character must be very experienced in this field, to prevent the child from exercising control and domination over him or her, managing the interview at his or her own pleasure. This is the most difficult character for the doctor who wants to interact effectively with a child.
